SUMMARY:Speakeasy Workshop: Reading Like A Writer
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays September 8th\, 15th\, 22nd\, and 29th join me to learn to read like a writer. In this discussion- and lecture-based class\, we’ll use short assigned texts to become stronger and more engaging writers. This workshop has four sessions.\n\n\n\n\nWe tend to read as readers and then write as writers\, missing out on many of the craft lessons we could be learning from the stories\, novels\, and memoirs we love. You might pause to admire a great line\, but when was the last time you took apart an author’s structure\, or charted out their use of tension\, or examined their scenes as units? \nIn this four-week class\, we’ll use short assigned texts as jumping-off points for craft talks about scene structure\, summary and exposition\, character interiority and exteriority\, and stakes. Most importantly\, we’ll learn how to read (and even watch movies) for craft so that we’ll never run out of free writing education. \nClass meetings will be discussion-and-lecture based; this is not a workshop class. Students will have access to an exclusive community to continue the discussion outside of class time\, sharing reading notes and recommendations. \n\n\n\nCourse Info: Wednesdays | Sep 8 – Sep 29 | 5pm PT / 8pm ET| 90 min | Limited to 20 participants\n\n\n\nPrice: $400.00 for all four sessions: September 8\, September 15\, September 22\, September 29\, 2021

SUMMARY:Unabridged Books Presents: "The Talented Miss Farwell" Virtual Event with Emily Gray Tedrowe & Rebecca Makkai
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the paperback release of The Talented Miss Farwell with author Emily Gray Tedrowe on Wednesday\, September 1st at 7:30 pm CDT! The author will be joined for a conversation by Rebecca Makkai!\nAbout the book: \nCatch Me If You Can meets Patricia Highsmith in this “stylish” (New York Times Book Review) page-turner of greed and obsession\, survival and self-invention that is a piercing character study of one unforgettable female con artist. \nAt the end of the 1990s\, with the art market finally recovered from its disastrous collapse\, Miss Rebecca Farwell has made a killing at Christie’s in New York City\, selling a portion of her extraordinary art collection for a rumored 900 percent profit. Dressed in couture YSL\, drinking the finest champagne at trendy Balthazar\, Reba\, as she’s known\, is the picture of a wealthy art collector. To some\, the elusive Miss Farwell is a shark with outstanding business acumen. To others\, she’s a heartless capitalist whose only interest in art is how much she can make. \nBut a thousand miles from the Big Apple\, in the small town of Pierson\, Illinois\, Miss Farwell is someone else entirely–a quiet single woman known as Becky who still lives in her family’s farmhouse\, wears sensible shoes\, and works tirelessly as the town’s treasurer and controller. \nNo one understands the ins and outs of Pierson’s accounts better than Becky; she’s the last one in the office every night\, crunching the numbers. Somehow\, her neighbors marvel\, she always finds a way to get the struggling town just a little more money. What Pierson doesn’t see–and can never discover–is that much of that money is shifted into a separate account that she controls\, “borrowed” funds used to finance her art habit. Though she quietly repays Pierson when she can\, the business of art is cutthroat and unpredictable. \nBut as Reba Farwell’s deals get bigger and bigger\, Becky Farwell’s debt to Pierson spirals out of control. How long can the talented Miss Farwell continue to pull off her double life? \nAbout the author:\nEmily Gray Tedrowe is the Chicago-based author of three novels including The Talented Miss Farwell.\nPhoto Credt: Marion Ettlinger \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRebecca Makkai is the Chicago-based author of the novels The Great Believers\, The Hundred-Year House\, and The Borrower\, as well as the short story collection Music for Wartime. The Great Believers was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award\, and received the ALA Carnegie Medal and the LA Times Book Prize\, among other honors. Makkai is on the MFA faculties of Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University\, and she is Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago. \n

With the pandemic still looming\, and the notion of artists presenting performative works at a venue that needed to be flexible in both physical structure and concept\, Almost Studio truly embraced the challenge with their interpretation of mobility. The range of projects this year is a testament to the relevance of the work of designers\, and we are honored to support the vision of this standout proposal.” – The 2021 Ragdale Ring Jury \n\n\n\nAlmost Studio: (L to R) Dorian Booth\, Isabella Calidonio Stechmann\, Anthony Gagliardi Photo: Jonathan Hokklö \n\n\n\n\nThe 2021 Ragdale Ring is sponsored by Syracuse University School of Architecture.

A gifted and reclusive ghostwriter\, Alice Lovett makes a living helping other people tell their stories. But she is haunted by the one story she can’t tell: the story of\, as she puts it\, “the things that happened while I was asleep.” \n1999. Nick Brothers and his lacrosse teammates return for their senior year at their wealthy Maryland high school as the reigning state champions. They’re on top of the world—until two of his friends drive a passed-out girl home from of the team’s “legendary” parties\, and a rumor about what happened in the backseat spreads through the town like wildfire. \nThe boys deny the allegations\, and\, eventually\, the town moves on. But not everyone can. Nick descends into alcoholism\, and Alice builds a life in fits and starts\, underestimating herself and placing her trust in the wrong people. When she finally gets the opportunity to confront the past she can’t remember—but which has nevertheless shaped her life—will she take it? \nAn inventive and breathtaking exploration of a woman finding her voice in the wake of trauma\, True Story is part psychological thriller\, part fever dream\, and part timely comment on sexual assault\, power\, and the very nature of truth. Ingeniously constructed and full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the final pages\, it marks the debut of a singular and daring new voice in fiction. \nAbout the Author \nKate Reed Petty has been recognized with a Narrative magazine 30 Below Award\, as well as grants and scholarships from the Robert Deutsch Foundation\, The Mount\, Bloedel Reserve\, and the Sewanee Writers Conference. Her short fiction has been published in Electric Literature\, American Short Fiction\, Blackbird\, Ambit\, Nat. Brut\, and Los Angeles Review of Books\, and she has a master of letters from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She lives in Baltimore.

SUMMARY:Lighthouse Lit Fest: Interiority Complex
DESCRIPTION:The great advantage of prose (over theater\, film\, and life) is that we’re privy to characters’ interior states. But how can a writer get thoughts and emotions across\, other than by stating them flat-out or by updating us constantly on breathing and heart rate? We’ll explore ways to use tangent\, gesture\, backstory\, action\, association\, and more to give characters a rich internal life without resorting to the old cardiopulmonary check-in. \nThis class accommodates 25+ writers.

SUMMARY:Lighthouse Lit Fest Advanced Weeklong Fiction Workshop: The Arc Of Story\, The Architecture Of Plot With Rebecca Makkai
DESCRIPTION:No one’s ever going to force you to write a traditional plot arc\, but the tools of narrative momentum—cause and effect\, development\, change\, stakes\, suspense—should be in every writer’s tool kit\, if only so we know what to rebel against. We’ll workshop student fiction in this light—focusing on arc\, on shape\, on plot or the intentional lack thereof—asking\, in every case\, what moves the story along\, and how it earns and keeps its audience. \nAccepted participants will submit up to 20 pages of fiction by May 10\, either a complete short story or a section of a novel\, and will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Rebecca during the week of class. \nPriority applications for Lit Fest Advanced Workshops close at midnight MT on March 13. Accepted applicants will be notified and able to register for this workshop in early April. SUMMARY:Miami Book Fair Presents: Get Your Story Off the Ground with Rebecca Makkai
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, May 3 – 24 (4 weeks)\n8 – 9:30 p.m. EST | Online via Google Meet  |  Register to receive link \n\nThere are decisions we make (about entry point\, tone\, point of view\, conflict\, stakes\, and more) in our opening pages that set us up for stories that practically write themselves\, or for ones that are bound to run quickly out of steam. \nIn this four-week class\, we will examine and edit student work (on a volunteer basis) in class\, helping bring the potential in each piece to the fore as early as possible. We will also study some masterful published first pages to see what works\, and we’ll geek out about arc\, momentum\, and language\, winding up with concrete takeaways\, writing exercises\, and strategies for revision. \nThis class is appropriate for anyone writing creative prose (fiction or nonfiction)\, and for students of all levels and backgrounds. \nRebecca Makkai’s latest novel\, The Great Believers\, was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award; it was the winner of the ALA Carnegie Medal\, the Stonewall Book Award\, the LA Times Book Prize\, the Clark Fiction Prize\, the Midwest Independent Booksellers Award\, and the Chicago Review of Books Award; and it was one of the New York Times’ Ten Best Books of 2018. Her other books are the novels The Borrower and The Hundred-Year House\, and the collection Music for Wartime — four stories from which appeared in The Best American Short Stories. Rebecca is on the MFA faculties of Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University. She is Artistic Director of StoryStudio Chicago. Visit her at RebeccaMakkai.com or on twitter@rebeccamakkai. \n\nScholarships Available for MDC Students\nMiami Book Fair is offering two (2) full-tuition scholarship for MDC students interested in attending the above-listed creative writing workshop. Applicants must be currently-enrolled\, (full time or part time) degree-seeking Miami Dade College students with a demonstrated financial need. \nTo Apply for a Scholarship:\nScholarship application due 3 business days before workshop starts (Due Tuesday\, April 27\, 11:59 p.m. EST) \nPlease send an email to Marci Cancio-Bello\, Miami Book Fair programs coordinator at mcanciob@mdc.edu before the start of the workshop you would like to attend. The message must include your contact information\, the title of the workshop you’d like to take\, a short statement of financial need\, your MDC class schedule\, and a writing sample. First-time writers who lack a writing sample should submit a statement explaining their interest in the workshop.

SUMMARY:Speakeasy Workshop: This Will Be Character-Building
DESCRIPTION:Join Rebecca Makkai for an intimate workshop designed to help you write an original short story or the first chapter of a novel or memoir — or to continue work on one in progress. In each session\, Rebecca will teach a different aspect of writing craft: backstory\, motivation\, dialogue\, and character evolution. This event has four sessions.\n\n\nE. M. Forster wrote that “incident springs out of character\, and having occurred it alters that character.” How do we create characters who will both cause interesting things to happen and be changed by their world? How do we get a whole lifetime across without an awkward backstory dump? What differences should we consider when crafting characters for novels versus short stories? How can a memoirist get real-life characters onto the page? \nThis workshop is designed to help participants write an original short story or the first chapter of a novel or memoir — or to continue work on one in progress. Participants will work on their projects outside of the workshop sessions. \nIn each session\, Rebecca will teach a different aspect of writing craft. (In our four sessions\, we’ll focus on backstory\, motivation\, dialogue\, and character evolution.) There will be discussion of what we’re writing and what we’re reading\, but sessions will primarily focus on Rebecca’s craft lessons. Because you won’t be workshopping each other\, this class will be a friendly and challenging learning environment for writers at all levels of education and experience. \n?After the fourth session\, participants will submit their projects (no more than 12 pages) to Rebecca\, and she will provide feedback to each person in the form of a marked-up manuscript and a brief feedback letter. \nDetails\nMondays: April 5 – April 26\, 2021\n\n\n5pm PT / 8pm ET – 90 min\n\n\nLimited to 15 participants\n\n\n\n$500.00 for all four sessions\n\n\n\nCode of Conduct \nWe look forward to building an inclusive\, supportive community of writers during our workshop and will not tolerate racist\, sexist\, or homophobic views. By signing up for this workshop\, you’re agreeing to uphold these norms. Though we don’t expect this to happen\, if someone violates these norms\, they will be removed from the workshop without a refund. \nWritten feedback from Rebecca is contingent on the writing sample you submit being coherent. You don’t need to be an experienced (or published!) writer by any means\, nor do you need to have perfect command of all aspects of English grammar\, but your writing should be comprehensible.

SUMMARY:Magic City Books Presents: Virtual Event – Kevin Brockmeier In Conversation with Rebecca Makkai
DESCRIPTION:Magic City Books is proud to welcome Kevin Brockmeier for a virtual author event in celebration of his new collection of stories\, The Ghost Variations.  \nThe author of the acclaimed novel The Brief History of the Dead now gives us one hundred funny\, poignant\, scary\, and thought-provoking ghost stories that explore all aspects of the afterlife. These tales are by turns playful\, chilling\, and philosophical\, paying homage to the genre while audaciously subverting expectations. The ghosts in these pages are certain to haunt you well after you’ve closed the book. \nKevin will be joined in conversation by Rebecca Makkai\, author of The Great Believers. \nThis free event will be hosted on the Zoom platform and Facebook Live. To register in advance for the Zoom event visit: https://magiccitybooks.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YUhZ3OLOR1arH2OuetXH7g. \nAfter you register you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the event on Friday\, March 12. \nThe Ghost Variations will be published on March 9\, 2021. To pre-order a copy you can call Magic City Books\, 918-602-4452 or visit: https://magiccitybooks.square.site/product/the-ghost-variations/437. \nAbout The Ghost Variations\nGhost stories tap into our most primal emotions as they encourage us to confront the timeless question: What comes after death? Here\, in tales that are by turn scary\, funny\, philosophic\, and touching\, you’ll find that question sharpened\, split\, reconsidered–and met with a multitude of answers. \nA spirit who is fated to spend eternity reliving the exact moment she lost her chance at love\, ghostly trees that haunt the occupant of a wooden house\, specters that snatch anyone who steps into the shadows\, and parakeets that serve as mouthpieces for the dead: these are just a few of the characters in this extraordinary compendium of one hundred ghost stories. Kevin Brockmeier’s fiction has always explored the space between the fantastical and the everyday with profundity and poignancy. As in his previous books\, The Ghost Variations discovers new ways of looking at who we are and what matters to us\, exploring how mysterious\, sad\, strange\, and comical it is to be alive–or\, as it happens\, not to be. \nKEVIN BROCKMEIER is the author of the memoir A Few Seconds of Radiant Filmstrip; the novels The Illumination\, The Brief History of the Dead\, and The Truth About Celia; the story collections The Ghost Variations\, Things That Fall from the Sky and The View from the Seventh Layer; and the children’s novels City of Names and Grooves: A Kind of Mystery. His work has been translated into seventeen languages. He teaches frequently at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and lives in Little Rock\, Arkansas\, where he was raised.

SUMMARY:Unabridged Bookstore Presents: Zak Salih's Virtual Tour for "LET'S GET BACK TO THE PARTY" in conversation with Rebecca Makkai
DESCRIPTION:It is 2015\, weeks after the Supreme Court marriage equality ruling\, and all Sebastian Mote wants is to settle down. A high school art history teacher\, newly single and desperately lonely\, he envies his queer students their freedom to live openly the youth he lost to fear and shame. \nWhen he runs into his childhood friend Oscar Burnham at a wedding in Washington\, D.C.\, he can’t help but see it as a second chance. Now thirty-five\, the men haven’t seen each other in more than a decade. But Oscar has no interest in their shared history\, nor in the sense of belonging Sebastian craves. Instead\, he’s outraged by what he sees as the death of gay culture: bars overrun with bachelorette parties\, friends coupling off and having babies. For Oscar\, conformity isn’t peace\, it’s surrender. \nWhile Oscar and Sebastian struggle to find their place in a rapidly changing world\, each is drawn into a cross-generational friendship that treads the line between envy and obsession: Sebastian with one of his students\, Oscar with an older icon of the AIDS era. And as they collide again and again\, both men must reckon not just with one another but with themselves. \nZak Salih lives in Washington\, D.C. His writing has appeared in Crazyhorse\, the Chattahoochee Review\, the Millions\, the Rumpus\, and other publications. This is his first novel. \nRebecca Makkai will be joining Zak Salih to celebrate the release of Let’s Get Back To The Party. \nTo participate in this virtual event\, sign up here.
